Echinopsis ancistrophora ssp. arachnacantha
With a globose growth form, the rich green stems of Echinopsis ancistrophora ssp. arachnacantha are ringed in distinct, rounded ridges and laced with clusters of creamy beige, recurved spines that truly do resemble small spiders – and thus earn this variety its Latin name! With ample sunlight, the stems may also deepen to a purple hue, creating an incredible backdrop for the stunningly large golden blooms that will emerge from stalks located around the outer edges of the plant, reaching upward and creating a display scarcely replicated amongst other cacti and succulents. Reaching only 3 inches tall and wide, it requires bright sunlight, such as from a southern-facing windowsill or a supplemental grow light. Beyond this need, the care of this Bolivian native is simple – a thorough but infrequent watering routine will help protect this relatively hardy variety from rot, while a porous soil mixture within a well-draining pot will further insure against this fate.
