Obsidian is formed when lava extruded from volcanoes rapidly cools with little to no crystal growth. It is a very hard and brittle stone, and fractures with sharp edges. Obsidian is not a true mineral due to its lack of a crystalline structure, and as such is typically classified as a mineraloid.
