
Maya Lin
The idea for the Illustrious Women series came to me in early 2017. It seemed there was a collective need to celebrate the feminine, and I wanted to draw attention to and educate myself about the many women who have gone before me- women who lived the lives they wanted to and bettered the world in the process. At age 21, she won a competition to design the Vietnam War Memorial. Her pared down, non- traditional design was controversial at the time, but it's now visited by 10,000 people each day. This also marked the start of a flourishing career. She went on to design a memorial to the civil rights movement & many other landscape installations and buildings. She's known for incorporating nature into her designs and creating spaces that interact with the inhabitant on a personal level. This
