Shepherd, Warrior, Poet, King David, known to his people as David HaMelech (David the King), is perhaps the quintessential example of manhood in the Hebrew scriptures. Like so many of his forebearers, David HaMelech began his life as a simple shepherd, learning the value of hard work and the virtue of protecting the defenseless. Young David took those values, and an unwaivering faith in the Almighty, to the battlefield, where he defeated the giant Golyas (Goliath), the Phillistine's most fearsome warrior, and according to Jewish oral tradition, David's own cousin. David would go on to become one of Israel's most illustrious kings, but he was also a profound thinker, a Torah scholar, a general leading his men from the front, and one of history's greatest poets. A "Renaissance man" more than 2,000 years before the Renaissance! The text on our design reads, in ancient paleo-Hebrew script: "David, King of Israel, lives and endures." These are the words of an old Jewish song traditional
