The Crossing-This is a scene from the Artist Ride in South Dakota—an invitational event where 50 artists from around the country gather at a make-shift 1800’s village to take photographic references for Western paintings. Actors, re-enactors, and Lakota tribe members participate, and the owners of the sprawling ranch run their longhorns and horses through the Cheyenne River so artists can photograph the scenes for future work. — Diana Madaras
