During the fabulous career of Harry Houdini (1874-1926) he used his influence to exert enormous pressure against the rise of fraudulent spirit mediums. These mediums took advantage of the trust people put in them and used their client's grief to manipulate and swindle them out of enormous sums of money. Since most of these frauds used techniques very similar to that of a magician, Houdini knew how it worked and would publicly expose them. He was very successful in his drive on unscrupulous mediums.
