Item number: CSMT399Genuine Antique Chart1856 Maker: USCSHand-colored antique nautical chart, showing the southern portion of Cape Cod as well as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, by the US Coast Survey, 1856. With soundings, bathymetric data, shoals, and information on tides, lighthouses, currents, etc. for Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound but apparently they had not surveyed Nantucket Sound at this time. The U.S. Coast Survey was tasked with surveying the coasts of the United States and creating survey report charts which would be used to create accurate nautical charts and to update charts as needed. This chart appears to be the first iteration of Chart No. 4 of the Sea Coast which shows all of Cape Cod and the Islands. Later color. Very good overall restored condition, this chart has been backed with light-weight paper. With folds as issued (flattened), some mild spots throughout and some slight toning along some of the folds. Measures approx. 22.25 x 31.75 inches to the neatline.Gen
