Five years ago, at the end of Trump’s first term, 20+ million people hit the streets in the George Floyd movement to protest police brutality, racism, and oppression. 54% of Americans supported the burning down of the Minneapolis police station—a de facto act of insurrection.   This movement—the largest in US history—expressed the underlying rage that had been building under the surface for decades. The problems facing American workers have only worsened since then. As witnessed in the protests in L.A. and around the country over Trump’s anti-immigrant attacks, there is a burning rage in society, and Trump is yet again threatening to spark the flames of revolt with his brutal provocations.   However, as the experience of 2020 shows, mass spontaneity is insufficient to mount an effective fight against the armed bodies of the state.
