The Violinist // Single cedar figurine

Handmade in Yucatán, MexicoThe devil’s in the detail of this whimsical figurine, which comes complete with his violin. The 4 ½-inch tall guitarist is hand-carved and painted by renowned Mexican folk artist Gabriel Chávez and protected with a matte varnish.Considered a master of Mexican folk art, Gabriel got his start at the age of 18 while working as a gardener in his hometown, Izamal. One day, he stumbled upon a tree root in which he saw the shape of a snake. This inspired him to learn to carve and transform wood into animal sculptures, figurines, nativity scenes and children’s toys. Gabriel has been carving ever since, and today he is proud to pass his woodworking skills down to his son and keep the tradition alive for future generations.
