Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus)

Mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus) are a species of killifish that inhabit estuaries along the Atlantic coast of the United States and Canada. They are also referred to as bull minnows, killis, chubs, and Atlantic killifish. Mummichogs are incredibly hardy and can tolerate a wide-variety of salinities, oxygen-levels, and pollution which has made them a popular choice for research. In fact they were the first fish ever sent to space aboard the United States' first space station, Skylab, in 1973. Both males and females are olive-colored, the females tend to be relatively plain while the males tend to be darker and are adorned with white and yellow flecks as well as thin, silvery bars arranged vertically across their sides. Breeding males are particularly colorful, developing a steely-blue dorsal and the area before the anal and caudal fins becoming bright yellow.  Mummichogs make for entertaining captives as they are very active and fun to feed.
