MARITIME OIL BY RICHARD ERNST LORENZ-MELLENBACH (1940s)
A traditional—and quite lovely—maritime study in oil on canvas by Berlin-trained German artist RICHARD ERNST LORENZ-MELLENBACH (1878-1950). In this nearly classical composition, four sailboats gently drift off the coast of the German island of Rügen in the southern Baltic Sea, where the painter was active. The calm surface of the water shimmers in the crepuscular light of the setting sun diffused through clouds. Turquoise bands of water echo the Kelly green hulls. A remarkably handsome new frame of wire-brushed hardwood.
