In 1981, Chihuly embarked on his Macchias series as a means to explore the vast potential of the three-hundred colors of glass rods available to him. Unleashing his creativity, he combined the colors in unexpected and endless combinations, resulting in a series that embraces infinite possibilities. Each Macchia sculpture consists of a solid color on the interior, a layer of either translucent or opaque white colored glass chips, and another layer of a different hue.
