It is a competitor to the predominant Indonesian variety of nutmeg, with differing qualities. The oil’s aroma and flavor retain the distinctly terpenic and spicy characteristics expected of nutmeg, though the oil’s higher quality allows it to be used in all manner of different flavor and fragrance applications. While it can generally be used interchangeably with Indonesian material, Sri Lankan nutmeg oil has a more pronounced woody undertone, giving the oil a richer dry down.
