A classic dwarf rainbowfish, Melanotaenia praecox is a peaceful addition to any tropical freshwater aquarium. This species tops out at 2.5 - 3.0 inches in captivity and will play nicely with larger rainbowfish, armoured catfishes from South America as well as most tetra species. The shimmering iridescent-blue scales and bright red fins make this an especially attractive and eye-catching addition to planted aquariums. Males will flash an electric-white nuptial band when enticing females to spawn and will sport red fins. Females will have orangeish yellow fins; specimens can be sexed at 0.5-0.75 inches, which make them great breeding projects for a lot of beginner hobbyists.
