The osprey, also known as the fish hawk, is a large bird of prey native to many parts of the world. It has large wings, dark brown plumage and it rarely strays far from rivers, lakes and coastal areas where plenty of fish can be found to eat. Ospreys have a unique reversible outer toe which allows them to gain firm grip on their slippery prey and they use their sharp talons and hooked beaks to catch and eat around one pound of fish per day. They typically nest in tall trees near bodies of water but with the decline in available habitat some are now using man-made platforms instead. While their populations have recovered since near extinction in 1970s due to pesticides, they refuse many efforts by humans to help bring them back — no matter what you do it is still difficult for us to truly understand the life of an osprey! --- Assembling puzzles is the perfect family bonding activity.
