Historically, they were used for both land-based and naval applications. During WWII, they were frequently preferred by RAF and USAAF navigators and bomb aimers (US: bombardiers) over conventional wristwatches. Aircrews found it easier to place a pocket watch on a chart, bench, or in the nose of the aircraft while working or approaching a target.
