The F-2, a versatile multirole fighter, emerged from the lineage of the USAF's F-16 but was a collaborative endeavor between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin, serving the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Commencing production in 1996, the manufacturing split stood at 60/40 between Japan and the United States. Its defining feature, larger wings, posed a design challenge; while they enhance payload and maneuverability, they typically burden the aircraft with additional weight, affecting acceleration, climbing, and range.
