
Larger sized Fly Fishing Net: Quilted Maple and Koa
This an elegant and functional traditionally sized landing net made with striking woods. 23 inches overall, 9 inch handle and a 14 x 10.5 inch hoop. This net handle was made from the small cutoffs of koa from a guitar maker in my area. For a number of years he would sell the saw cutoff to a local Woodcraft. I was always on the look out for the special pieces. I tried to use each piece down to the sawdust, it was that special. This handle was created from that wood and some special maple I found a number of years ago. (25 years). The cut offs of a special piece of maple from a small saw mill in Iowa are also used. When I first started making nets I went to that mill with my father. Walking across the mill yard, there was a block of wood covered by mud and grim, the grain of the wood just barely showed through. When I bought my lumber I asked about that small board and they replied, "Just take it." I cut it into small planks and let it dry. When I finally used that wood, I foun
