The first thing I think of when I hear/read "Alum" is jewelry. The second thing is pickles (it makes them crispier). It's an ancient material. Why do I say jewelry? When I worked at a fine jewelry shop years ago, a master jeweler (and friend) taught me how to easily remove a steel drill bit broken off in a piece of gold jewelry he was working on. He said all he had to do was put it in a solution of alum overnight and the next day the broken drill bit would be gone. I thought he was putting me on. But, it worked like magic, next day drill bit had vanished. As it turns out you can actually use a pickle itself in place of the alum. So there's one more use for pickles!...(see more)
