This form of quartz is not crystalline. It has water molecules between crystalline quartz molecules. How "opal" the quartz is depends on the amount of water. This has a low amount, so it's pretty transparent. The pieces are 1" to 1 1/2", a few are 2", the bowl is 7" in diameter. The white areas are due to fractures when it was mined, which scatter the light. I put a 5 lb bag of it in a clear bowl. It reminded me of a bowl of ice cubes, especially since there was a heat wave at the time. I decided to put the the whole thing, bowl and "Ice", up for sale to see if someone liked it as well as I did....(see more)
