Mostly occurring from southern California northward in the Coos Bay region of Oregon, this lovely West Coast camas-relative sometimes shows up magically and randomly in the Willamette Valley -- and even as far north as southern Vancouver Island. While those far northern occurrences of this plant possibly originate as seeds hitchhiking in someone’s pant cuff (or as intentional transplants), the fact that it can grow so far north speaks to its adaptability. Ithuriel’s spear has slow-roastable, edible corms (bulb-like structures), like its relatives wild hyacinth, camas, and ookow. Its marvelous blue flowers tower above surrounding meadow vegetation, growing atop large, open panicles in mid-spring, and rising from thin, wispy, grass-like foliage that tends to fade quickly -- and almost invisibly into the undergrowth even as the flowers put on a spectacular display.
