Coreopsis lancelota / Lance-leaved Coreopsis is a North American native flower in the Asteraceae family. Showy yellow flowers grace the plant May through July. Growing around 2 feet tall with a 1 to 1.5 inch spread, Coreopsis lanceolata does best in full sun in dry to medium soils, but is tolerant of many soil types, and can be a vigorous self-seeder. This plant is sometimes referred to as Tickseed because of the resemblance of the seeds to the parasitic arachnid that we love so much. In fact the genus name is derived from the Greek words koris meaning “bug” and opsis meaning “like”. Have no fear though, Lance-leaved Coreopsis doesn’t attract ticks. However the beneficial bees and butterflies enjoy Coreopsis flowers as much as we do!
