Big Bluestem also called "Turkey Foot " is known as "The King of the Prairie," the quintessential prairie grass. It is found on virtually all high quality prairie remnants. In pristine prairie it composes anywhere from 40 to 60% or so of the plant biomass. Up to 60% of this plant is actually underground where its roots and rhizomes help increase soil fertility and water percolation, this makes it valuable as a soil stabilizer minimizing erosion. Great habitat plant for upland game birds. Found from the western side of the Rocky mountains to the east coast and from Florida north into Canada. Look for Big Bluestem in our Native Tall Grass and Wildflower Seed Mix and our Whitetail Deer Native Grass Bedding Mix. How To Plant Big Bluestem Seeds: Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and in early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch
