
Black Walnut Extract
While many of us may be familiar with large, rich English walnuts sold in grocery stores, perhaps we are not as familiar with black walnuts which are smaller, harder, and more pungent. While the meaty internal kernels have been used as food for hundreds of the years, the outer green hulls of black walnut have been equally employed for their healthful properties in traditional folk herbalism. Juglans nigra is a large, deciduous tree native to eastern North America and cultivated throughout Europe. A member of the Juglandaceae family, black walnut thrives in riparian ecosystems. The stately tree has pinnate leaves and produces numerous green fruits which slowly ripen to yellow. Long-lived, black walnut produces chemicals which it releases from its roots that keep other plants from growing beneath it, giving the tree more nutrients for itself and less competition.
