This pen is probably from 1936 because it has a celluloid covered carbon steel rod that is in perfect condition. Sheaffer switched to using stainless steel rods some time in 1936 or 1937. The celluloid is gorgeous apart from one nick in the side of the cap. The barrel transparency is a bit cloudy and red but not darkened. There is a bit of plating loss - particularly on the edges of the cap band on one side. Both these minor flaws are shown in the photos. The filler rod is in excellent condition and the filler gaskets have been replaced with modern synthetic materials that will last for year. The only maintenance is an occasional dab of silicone grease on the rod. The Statesman is the 2nd largest Balance pen Sheaffer made. It is comparable in physical dimensions to a modern Pelikan M6xx or Sailor 1911L (ProFit 21). I have large hands and find no problem writing with the pen without posting the cap on the barrel end.
