The ad shows an elephant performing a circus trick, standing on its head. (Please note that there is printing on the reverse.) Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, Hohlwein first studied for a career in architecture but by 1906 had turned to commercial art and poster design. A photogravure is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate--an expensive and rarely used process today.
