Bringing the Bones Home: A Postcolonial Reading of the Philippine Novel, 1887–2018

Colonialism is central to the life, culture, and history of our people; and a number of Filipino novelists (namely, Jose Rizal, Linda Ty-Casper, F. Sionil Jose, Maximo M. Kalaw, Juan C. Laya, Bienvenido N. Santos, Stevan Javellana, Edilberto K. Tiempo, Wilfrido D. Nolledo, Ninotchka Rosca, Miguel Syjuco, and Gina Apostol) have looked at the various permutations of that colonial trauma. This book traces these authors’ arc of resistance from Rizal’s  Noli Me Tangere  (1887) to Apostol’s  Insurrecto  (2018), spanning more than 130 years, three colonial periods, and one post-independence era.
