Dendrobium aggregatum( Dendrobium lindleyi)
Dendrobium aggregatum( Dendrobium lindleyi) Dendrobium lindleyi Yellow (Dendrobium aggregatum) is native to India, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. This orchid is known for its cascading bright yellow flowers that bloom in the spring. In fact when we were in Thailand we saw them growing in the trees (see vid here) and asked the locals about them. The local name is big bee orchid for the large bee that pollinates them in the spring. It is also used to decorate Songkran festivals. Sonkran is a water festival that celebrates the return of the rains after dry season and lindleyi's spectacular blooms do just that! To trigger blooming, it requires cool nights (50 to 60°F) and dry conditions, along with a suspension of fertilization during this period. Unlike some of its relatives, Dendrobium lindleyi retains its leaves throughout the year. This is one of our favorite for how easy it is to grow and the actual show it puts on in the spring.
