Gérôme painted this stunning picture on his return to Paris, after a twelve-week expedition to the Middle East, at the beginning of 1868. He was then at the peak of his career. He dressed a model of textiles he had acquired in the Levant in his studio. Gerome gave a Turkish title to the canvas, which can be translated as "bad head," which evokes the ferocious mercenaries without faith or law whose only pay was the spoils of their looting.
