Look at the green pot at the widened opening. It has an oval larger than the ellipse than the eye would actually see! This is a way that reduces the depth of space by tilting the oval upwards. This distortion will ultimately be an integral part of the Cubist way of limiting the depth of a painting. Here, it represents one of the discoveries that Cézanne made that a painting could become an object in itself as much as a window open to the world.
