The odalisque is one more testimony to the state of research pursued by Ingres: color is only an accessory, the line is the supporting element which determines the rhythm and reveals the shapes of the painting. Orientalist fashion once again completely absorbed Ingres, adding a touch of "occidentalism" that makes it more difficult to determine a precise iconographic source.
