Many years ago, at a large Florida flea market, I was claimed by Saint Lucia—or maybe reminded of my ancestral devotion to her. At the time, I didn’t know who she was, but the antique painting haunted me in a way that made me know she had to come home with me. When I realized it was Saint Lucia of Syracuse, Sicilian like my maternal lineage, I knew she was now my primary patron saint. • I’ve shared her story over the years, and there’s too much to say in a single post, but like many women, she was given to a man in hopes of a better life, though she had already promised herself to a higher calling. When she refused to marry, the torture began. They tried to send her to a brothel, but she became immovable. They attempted to burn her, but the fire did not work. Did they gouge out her eyes, or did she? The final blow was a sword to her neck.
