Robert Cenedella's painting, George Grosz in America (1973), is a homage to Cenedella's mentor, teacher and friend, Artist George Grosz (1893-1959). Painted entirely from Memory, Cenedella has Grosz sitting down in his perm pressed black suit, white collared shirt, and black tie. He sits in a windowed room holding a tiny American flag in his right hand while smoking his pipe. And as you look out the window, you see into the windows of two other buildings until the open landscape of New Jersey (and the rest of America) become visible. This is a symbolic painting of a German citizen who aspired for recognition in America for over 25 years until returning back to Germany where he met an untimely death.
