New Soviet recruit standing in the street of Stalingrad summer of 1942, just when the Battle of Stalingrad opened. Wearing SSh-40 helmet, gymnastiorka shirt, field breeches and kirza boots. Webbing included an M41 Turkish backpack, gas mask bag, entrenching tool, water bottle, ammunition pouch for the 7.62mm PPSh-41 submachine gun he was holding, and bedding roll carried over his shoulder.
