Rolex Submariner ref.1680 de 1980

When reference 1680 was introduced into the Rolex catalog, the biggest change to the Submariner up to that point was the addition of a date function. Rolex still offers the Submariner with or without a date, and the ref. 1680 was the first available with the complication. This reference was made in the late 1970s with very little variation beyond a change in the color of the "Submariner" font on the dial. Until the serial number of 4.0 million, or around the mid-1970s, the model name was in red, and then Rolex changed the dial to completely white text, like the watch we have today. The ref. 1680 fits almost perfectly, at least in the minds of vintage collectors, at the intersection of old-world charm and Rolex reliability.
