A rare Egyptian Malachite Wedjat Eye, Late Period, ca. 664 - 332 BCE

Carved from sparkling malachite, the amulet represents the healed eye of the god Horus and embodies healing power as well as regeneration and protection. In ancient Egypt, malachite was associated with death and the power of resurrection as well as new life and fertility. Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife contained an eternal paradise which resembled their lives but with no pain or suffering, and referred to this place as the 'Field of Malachite".   Malachite was used in the elaborate cosmetic designs that high ranking Egyptians would paint around their eyes to distinguish themselves and mimic their falcon-headed god, Horus.  Medium:  Malachite Dimensions:  Length: 1 1/8 inches (2.9 cm) Condition:  Chip to one corner but overall intact and in very good condition. Provenance:  Private Maryland collection of a diplomat, acquired while serving in Egypt between 1949 and 1956, and then by descent.
