A Levantine Black Serpentine Seal, ca. late 2nd - early 1st millennium BCE

Seals of this form represent the most basic examples of seals for everyday use by common people. These pyramid-shaped seals are of black stone, often steatite, and have square impression bases. They all have bi-directional drill holes through the top of the pyramid to allow for suspension.  This example features a cross engraving at the base. Dimensions:  Height: 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) Condition:  Intact and in very good condition overall.  Provenance:  Stewart Giles (1951-1993) private collection acquired in London between 1978 and 1982, then by family descent.
