In August of 2011, while driving to get some tacos, I heard an item on National Public Radio concerning the consumption rate of pork in the United States. They played a clip from the movie "Trading Places" (1983) that made a reference to the buying and selling of pork belly futures. Pork consumption used to drastically increase during the holidays and summer months. At the time of this broadcast there was no longer a demand to justify trading in pork belly futures because the U.S. was eating pork, (bacon was mentioned A LOT), on a regular basis (among other reasons). The Chicago Mercantile Exchange de-listed pork belly futures for trading in July of 2011. When I arrived at the taco stand to order three Adobada (marinated pork) tacos, I was greeted by a laminated sign that read " OUT OF PORK."
