Druzy Agate Hearts
Druzy pockets in agate are the result of a fascinating geological process. Agate is a type of microcrystalline quartz that forms within cavities and voids in volcanic or sedimentary rocks. As water containing dissolved silica flows through these cavities, it slowly deposits tiny quartz crystals on the inner surface of the rock. Over time, these crystals grow, layer by layer, creating the characteristic banded patterns of agate. In some instances, the quartz crystals in agate don't fully cover the inner surface, leaving gaps and crevices. These gaps become the druzy pockets when they are subsequently coated with a layer of even smaller quartz crystals. The result is a sparkling, glittering surface, known as druzy, which forms a beautiful contrast to the smooth, banded layers of agate.
