Calico Aster is a native herbaceous perennial with stiff, hairy strap-like foliage.  Densely branched clusters of small white to pale lavender flowers with yellow centers that deepen to red centers as it ages bloom on rigid stems in fall.  Grows best in full sun and dry to medium well-drained alkaline soils.   Symphyotrichum lateriflorum is a host for Confused Eusarca and Little Yellow, and supports several species of specialized bees.
