Conterno, Giacosa, Mascarello, one can not discuss the keepers of the flame of traditionally-produced Nebbiolo without uttering these celebrated family names. The Giuseppe Mascarello estate (like that of the same-named but unrelated Bartolo estate) has a penchant for crafting Baroli with elegance, purity and structure signature of the noble Nebbiolo grape. Beginning in 1970, winemaker Mauro Mascarello has produced the 'Monprivato' cru from a vaunted southwest-facing parcel of blue-grey marl in the Castiglione Falletto commune of Barolo. What's more the 'Monprivato' vineyard is solely in Mascarello hands akin to the 'monopole' vineyards of Burgundy allowing Nebbiolo to thrive with an insular focus.
