Very rare Scottish Presbyterian work, sold only by subscription. Hugh Mair [1797-1854] was born in Loudoun, Ayrshire, Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow and acquired his license to preach in 1823. He was initially a missionary in Scotland and in the Orkney Islands, probably connected to the missionary bands of James and Robert Haldane. Then, in 1828 he sailed to the United States where he became a pastor at the Presbyterian churches in Fort Miller and Northumberland, New York. From 1830-1844 he ministered at Johnstown, NY. In 1832 he married Maria Harriet Metcalf of Northumberland, NY, and received his Doctorate of Divinity from the University of New York in 1842.In 1846-1847 he visited Ontario, and in 1847 accepted the position of minister to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Fergus, Ontario.
