I call them the velociraptors of the modern world for their voracious and intense hunting styles. As a bird of prey, they feed almost exclusively on small to mid-sized birds and quail are a natural favorite.  Plotting their attacks from deep cover they rely on speed and surprise to make their kills.  I love the way an entire covey of quail will burst from their hiding space when a Cooper’s hawk is in hot pursuit. Unfortunately for the quail, once a Cooper’s hawk has locked in on its prey it is almost impossible to escape its clutches.
