Sir Harry H. Johnston, The Uganda Protectorate. London: Hutchinson & Co., 1902. Two volumes. xxx, 470; xiv, 471-1016 pages. Hardbound first edition. The aesthetic appeal of this set is difficult to overstate. The interior boards, front and back, feature lovely flowers in color. The front of the volumes shows a raised image of an African in gilt. The frontispiece to Volume 1 is the author’s drawing of the okapi, which he discovered. Add nine maps, a panoply of illustrations (over 500, with 48 color plates), and much more and you have something special. Condition is about good. There is wear to the corners, one folding map is loose, and the spines are beginning to crack internally. Still a highly desirable set. $200.
