The Peace Dollars That Might Have Been Despite being minted from only 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935, the Peace Silver Dollar remains one of the most iconic United States coin designs. Created by Italian-born American artist Anthony de Francisci, it commemorated the Allies’ victory in World War I and the peace that followed. But did you know that this iconic, recognizable design was not the only design submitted for use on the new dollar? In addition to De Francisci, eight different artists submitted designs for consideration—including one by de Francisci’s mentor, Adolph A. Weinman, designer of the famous Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Most of the rejected designs were lost to time, but recently photos of Weinman’s Peace Dollar sketches have come to light, providing us with a glimpse of what the master sculptor envisioned for the Peace Dollar.
