#1 Premium Small Smoothing Plane - 5-3/4" Sole, 1-3/8" Wide Blade
This plane is inspired by the Stanley #1, manufactured from 1867 to 1943. The #1 was a compact smoothing plane originally designed for fine, detail-oriented work on small surfaces and in tight spaces. Initially marketed for children or beginners with small hands, these Stanley planes are now highly sought after by collectors, with rare examples often fetching over $2,800. For modern woodworkers, the #1 serves as an alternative to a block plane, excelling in spot smoothing and precision tasks. Its high cutting angle and chip breaker minimizes tear-out compared to low-angle block planes. Typically used with one hand, the tote rests comfortably in the thumb web space, while the fingers grip the sides. For tricky grain, it can be operated with both hands for added control. At just 5-5/8” long, this plane has all the features of a regular size bench plane, except for a lateral blade adjuster (the Stanley No 1 didn't have one either). Light hammer taps to the side of the blade will adjust
