This Kyo-yaki ceramic kōgō (incense container) is made in the shape of a hagoita (羽子板), the paddle used in hanetsuki, Japanese badminton. The kōgō is painted and gilded with traditional motifs.Made by Hashimoto Shirotake (橋本城岳), this kōgō comes with its original kirbako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box)In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kōgō (香合) are used to hold kōboku (香木 - fragrant wood incense) during the furo (風炉 - brazier) season while ceramic kōgō are used to hold nerikō (練り香 - kneaded incense) during the ro (炉 - hearth) season.Kyo-yaki (京焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Kyoto, Japan.
