Siamese Algae Eaters Siamese Algae Eaters, also known by their scientific name (Crossocheilus siamensis or Crossocheilus oblongus), are freshwater fish from the family Cyprinidae. They are native to Southeast Asia including Thailand and Malaysia. They are popular among aquarists due to their ability to scarf down algae. These fish are identifiable by a bold black stripe that runs from the nose to the tail with one eye-catching stripe line on each side. Siamese Algae Eaters can grow up to about 6 inches (16cm) and hence require a tank of at least 30 gallons for better results. Water temperature should be between 75°F and 79°F and a pH range of between 6.5 and 7.0. These fish species are bottom dwellers and since they spend most of their time at the bottom of the tank, a sandy substrate makes it safer for them to swim around without scratching their body.
