PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES A brilliant piece of Ancient Roman Glass, cased within a golden setting. As a loose term, Ancient Roman Glass is used to refer to most all ancient glass after the Mesopotamian period, just prior to the rise of Rome, up to the 4th Century AD, geographically stretching from the Rhine River (which stretches from modern day Switzerland up to the Netherlands) & down to Egypt, & from Britain over to Asia Minor (today's Turkey) & countries along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.Made of white silica sand & soda ash, naturally occurring impurities like iron & manganese were not only inevitable, but purposefully added in the earliest of man made glass to give it a tinge of color. The green hue of this particular vessel implies it would have had a higher elemental content of iron.The Iridescence & patina of ancient glass is a highly prized visual indicator that the piece has, in fact, been in the ground for a couple thousand years.
