Summarizing Stories (Reading Mini Unit) 4th & 5th Grade

   This mini unit includes resources to introduce or review summarizing to your 4th and 5th graders. The unit is aligned to the Common Core standards. However, it is rooted in providing a foundation for being able to summarize a story and support reading comprehension. Teaching and consistently revisiting how to summarize helps children hold on to the stories as their books get longer and texts get harder. This unit includes reading comprehension passages, questions, exit slips, and activities. What is included? In this unit, we use 4 different strategies to summarize. You don’t have to use all four strategies. You can teach one strategy that you feel comfortable with and just continue reteaching. This will give students repeated opportunities to practice. My personal favorite is the SWBST
